Seminars:Firescaping & Don't Get Burned By Cal/OSHA

With fires raging throughout California, homeowners are increasingly turning to green industry professionals for help. Landscape Designer Renee French will talk you through the design, plant selection and maintenance steps need to increase property value and provide homeowners with peace of mind. In addition to addressing the ins and outs of firescaping, she'll also address another hot topic: Petscaping -- beautiful landscapes that make special consideration for pets.

When it comes to peace of mind, Cal/OSHA may be the last thing you want to think about. Our second speaker, Dan Leiner, an Area Manager for Cal/OSHA's Consultation Services Branch, will quickly change that opinion. With plenty of practical advice, Dan will help you avoid being burned by Cal/OSHA regulations.

LandPAC Fundraiser Breakfast

LandPAC is the California Landscape Contractors Association's political action committee (PAC). Its purpose is to raise funds from the landscape industry and use that money to support qualified candidates for political office.

LandPAC is an important adjunct to CLCA's governmental affairs program, a program that also includes professional lobbying, grass roots action, and communications with members and other groups. LandPAC complements and enhances these other program elements.

During breakfast, Dr. Douglas Johnson will share his insights and reactions to the election results and how they fit into the larger national, state and local picture. In addition to analysis of specific results of the November 6 elections, Dr. Johnson will cover what the election means for the bigger picture:
• What happens next with the president?
• Is the California Republican Party dead?
• What do the election results mean for the rising numbers of “No Party Preference” voters in California? And what does the largely ignored “quiet tsunami” of election system changes in California’s local governments mean for the future of local governance and regulations?

Dr. Johnson is a Fellow at the Rose Institute of State and Local Government at Claremont McKenna College, where he leads the Institute’s projects on Census, Demographics, Redistricting and Elections. A graduate of Claremont McKenna College with an MBA from the Anderson School at UCLA and a Ph.D. in Political Science from Claremont Graduate University, Dr. Johnson is a national expert on demographics and elections who often speaks at meetings and conferences of the National Conference of State Legislators, League of Cities, California School Board Association, California Special Districts Association, Arizona League of Cities and Towns, and League of Women Voters. His writings have appeared in the LA Times, Christian Science Monitor, and the New York Times, and he has been featured on CNN, Fox News, and local television news outlets.

As President of National Demographics Corporation, Dr. Johnson was the lead technician for Arizona’s first-in-the-nation 2001 Independent Redistricting Commission and has led districting and redistricting projects for hundreds of counties, cities, school districts and special districts across California, Arizona and Nevada. He has served as an expert witness in numerous state-level and local cases involving redistricting, voting rights, and elections.
