To become a Landscape Industry Certified Technician
Applicants must pass every problem in the written and field tests within any of the 5 modules. The 5 modules include: Softscape Installation, Hardscape Installation, Irrigation, Turf Maintenance, & Ornamental Maintenance. A full list of problems within these modules can be found at Module List (pdf). Those who fail any problems only have to retake the problem(s) missed (not the whole test). If more than three consecutive years have elapsed since an attempt was made to retest, the candidate must begin the module over.
For the hands-on problems applicants rotate through timed problems which are supervised by one or more judges, where they demonstrate skills in “real life” scenarios. Applicants are judged on work methods, adherence to best practices, and safety ideals.
All written information is also available in Spanish.
Big changes are coming for the Landscape Industry Certified Technician program
As of December 31, 2019, the current exams will be eliminated. A new exam will be created and administered completely online and through remote proctoring.
Applicants who have already taken the written and/or hands-on exams and are eligible to re-take any portion of the exam will have opportunities to re-test. However, that eligibility window ends December 31, 2019. After that date, anyone who has not passed the test will be required to take the new exam in its entirety.
Unfortunately, because of these changes by the National Association of Landscape Professionals and the expiration of the ability to offer the test after December 31, 2019, CLCA will not accept any new exam applicants, effective immediately.
