About Our Presenter
CLCA is excited to be joined by Duane Sparkman, an industry veteran restoration horticulturist.
He is a trained arborist and chemical applicator and currently works for the Westin Maui Resort and Spa as their Chief Engineer.
He describes his life goals as “slowly changing the methodology of landscape maintenance. Looking for truly sustainable models are a priority.”
As the Organic Landscape Consultant for the Maui Nui Marine Resource Council, he helps homeowners and landowners change to organic landscape practices.
Duane is also working with a South Maui developer on a 25-acre neighborhood that will be completely coral reef safe with their requirements for organic landscape practices.
He serves on the Board of Directors of Maui Cultural Lands, a nonprofit Hawaiian cultural land restoration group. They are working together on a 74-acre Hawaiian cultural center in Olowalu, Maui called Kipuka Olowalu. Here, they teach Hawaiian culture along with sustainable organic landscape and organic farming practices.

Duane, in his own words:
“When I was 19 years old, going to college at The University of Texas in Austin and working on my astrophysics degree, I had a chance to move to Maui. I sold everything I owned and bought a one-way airplane ticket and didn’t return to Texas for 13 years. I worked my way up to become part owner of a large landscape company that maintained 65 acres of resorts along the beautiful coastlines of Maui.
“I also spent countless hours of volunteer work in the mountains and valleys of Maui, removing invasive species and planting endangered species. I eventually had an opportunity to work for Haleakala National Park as a Scientific Biological Technician. This is where my landscape view changed. If I never need to fertilize the forests, why do I need to fertilize urban landscapes?
“I spent the next six years changing an entire 12-acre oceanfront resort to organic landscape practices. Since that successful transition, I have been to all the Hawaiian Islands helping the municipalities and schools change to organic landscape practices in the parks and playing fields. This was in partnership with Beyond Pesticides out of Marblehead, Massachusetts, to reduce our chemical inputs and liability of exposures.

Getting There
There are two airports in Maui. The larger airport is Kahului Airport (OGG). It is the only airport you can use to fly between Maui and the mainland. Kahului Airport is a 45-minute drive to the Westin Maui Resort and Spa. Ten airlines fly into Kahului Airport.
Kapalua Airport (JHM) is a smaller airport located in West Maui. It operates only during daylight hours and is for inter-island flights only. Flights from the mainland or international do not fly directly into Kapalua Airport.
Ground Transportation
It’s a 45-minute drive from the Kahului airport to the Westin Maui Resort and Spa. The Hawaii Tourism Authority maintains a list of Maui transportation options.

Out & About in Maui
What’s a Hawaiian adventure without a luau?
If you want fire dancers with your meal, look for a Polynesian luau, such as the highly regarded Feast at Lele Luau or the Westin Maui Resort and Spa’s own Wailele Luau.
The Old Lahaina Luau strives to present an authentic Hawaiian experience, where diners can taste, feel and smell luau traditions that have been held generation after generation.
While the menus at each luau vary somewhat, all offer the same basic traditional foods including pua’a kalua (roasted pig) cooked all day in an underground imu which is opened as part of the evening’s entertainment.
In answer to the question of “Where to eat and drink in one of the most beautiful places on earth?”, the influential Eater website lists what they call “23 essential Maui restaurants.” A concise cross section of options defines this list: A handful of tourist destinations worthy of their popularity, a few locals’ hangouts for variations on traditional Hawaiian fare and a requisite pit stop for pineapple-macadamia nut pie.
The popular Pride of Maui website also offers a list of top restaurants.
More convenient: Whalers Village features 10 restaurants, all right next door to the Westin Maui Resort and Spa.
Pro Tip: CLCA Events Manager Micheyl Barnett recommends the Honokowai Okazuya & Deli in nearby Lahaina. It’s where the locals eat.
Good news for those whose idea of a good time includes shopping. Whalers Village features 10 restaurants, 77 stores and more, all right next door to the Westin Maui Resort and Spa.
Further afield, a convenient shuttle can whisk you away to scenic downtown Lahaina. The West Maui Shopping Express makes stops at Whalers Village, the Wharf Cinema Center, Hilo Hattie (the store of Hawaii), the Lahaina Cannery Mall and the Lahaina-Kaʻanapali Sugar Cane Train (expected to re-open by November).
Those seeking adventure on the road less travelled are in luck. If you want to go on your own, mopeds and bicycles are available for rent.
Cruiser Phil’s and Bike Maui offer more structured guided bicycle tours, ranging from the sedate to hair-raising downhills on a twisty mountain road.
November is the start of Hawaii’s whale-watching season, and Makena State Park is reported to offer amazing views. Highly recommended: Watch from atop Puʻu Olai, a 360-foot-tall dormant volcanic cinder cone in the center of the park.
The more remote Wai Anapanapa State Park features an ancient Hawaiian coastal trail which leads to Hana. It offers an excellent view of a large seabird colony and a natural stone arch. Other features include a native hala forest, heiau (religious temple), sea stacks, blow holes and a small black sand beach.
The Road to Hana is one of Maui’s most famous adventures. It’s 64 miles long through a lush tropical rainforest, with 59 bridges and 620 curves. Scenic turnouts abound, including one for Wailua Falls near the Seven Sacred Pools in Oheʻo. You can drive yourself or join one of dozens of guided tours.
If you’d rather leave the driving to someone else, other tours that caught our eye include:

A “farm to bar” tour of the Ku’ia Estates Chocolate Factory in Lahaina, the largest chocolate factory in the state of Hawaii. This tour includes hands-on fruit harvesting and finishes with an exclusive nine-piece tasting of award-winning chocolates.

Maui has a history of stellar opportunities for sand castle building, hiking, scuba diving, snorkeling, surfing, kayaking and long walks on the beach.
They also have a history with kites. “With more windy days than you can shake your board at, it’s no wonder that Maui tops out at one of the best kitesurfing spots in the world,” the website kiterr notes. Recommended for kite fliers: The breathtaking views and favorable offshore breezes at Kanaha Beach Park.
